Yellowcard perform at the o2 Academy Newcastle

Yellowcard crashed into Newcastle on 10th March, on a tour with All Time Low, following a 5 year absence from our shores. This Newcastle o2 Academy date was the latest on their UK tour and they gave it everything they had.  The cracking high tempo track ‘Lights and Sounds’ kicked off the night and the intensity didn’t let up for the entire time they were on the stage.

The energy of frontman Ryan Key lends itself greatly to the high tempo tracks as energy poured from the stage and into the bouncing crowd. Whilst having the presence to keep all eyes on him during the more emotional and slow songs. They are a band, which it is clear to see, love their job.  The smiles are spread across their faces from the first chord to the last, and they sound genuinely appreciative to the crowd.

The ravenous crowd was treated to some of their amazing back catalogue, as well as two tracks from their upcoming album, “When You’re Through Thinking, Say Yes” which is out on 22nd March 2011. The new tracks which they played were “Hang you up” and "For You, and Your Denial" and fit perfectly with the rest of their material. It’s not to say that they were just recycling old ideas, instead what they have done is crafted a new album which feels fresh and new, whilst still keeping the character and soul of Yellowcard alive.  Their use of a violin is never gimmicky; instead it is an intrinsic part of the songs, and the guitar riffs and vocals are often layered and interwoven through the score.

It’s hard to pick out just one song as a highlight from the set, but for its reaction from the crowd I would have to choose “Ocean Avenue” from the album of the same name.  As a set closer it was perfection.  The rhythmic pop punk riffs and balanced build up lead to an explosive chorus, which ignited the room, the vibrations flowing through every member of the crowd.

When you’re through thinking..say yes? I wouldn’t have to think for a second about seeing these guys again. The only disappointing thing about the entire set was that it had to end. 40 minutes went past in the blink of an eye.  Let’s hope they have a UK headline tour planned soon.
